The human body can get hurt in countless ways; however, when it comes to injuries caused by negligence, there are a few types of injuries personal injury lawyers see repeatedly.

Sprains, Strains, Bruises, and Lacerations

Muscle sprains, strains, bruises, and lacerations are common soft tissue injuries. Sprains occur when the ligaments in your body stretch or tear. Ligaments are connective tissues that connect the bones in your body. They stabilize and support your joints. Thus, the parts of your body that are most susceptible to sprains are your ankles, knees, and wrists.

Strains happen when muscles and tendons sustain damage. Tendons are fibrous cords of tissue that attach muscles to bones. Strains are more likely to happen in your back or legs. They may involve the stretching or tearing of your muscles or tendons.

A bruise may form when a part of your body sustains a direct and forceful blow by a blunt object, crushing the underlying muscle fibers and connective tissues without breaking the skin. When a laceration occurs, there is a tearing of soft body tissue. Recovering from these injuries may require less medical treatment but could take several weeks.

Bone Fractures

Some victims of car crashes or slip and fall accidents suffer bone fractures in the legs, arms, shoulders, and hips when their bones sustain more pressure than they can withstand. Broken bones can take a minimum of six to eight weeks to heal—that’s a lot of time away from work if you’re not eligible to take on diminished job responsibilities while you recover.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have lasting effects on those who endure them. TBIs often occur in car, motorcycle, and truck accidents, but they may also affect victims of slip-and-falls. When the head sustains a violent blow, the force can trigger brain dysfunction. A TBI can lead to mild to severe concussions, depending on the severity of the blow. Stronger blows to the head result in more severe concussions, which may lead to longer-lasting or permanent brain damage.

Traumatic brain injuries severely damage a victim’s quality of life, and it is uncertain who may recover fully from them. Urgent treatment is crucial for recovering from a TBI and may involve medication and/or surgery.

According to the American Burn Association, more than 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention each year. Heat, radiation, radioactivity, electricity, or chemicals cause burns, and they often occur in personal injury cases involving defective products. If you’ve sustained a first-, second-, or third-degree burn injury due to negligence, carelessness, or intentional misconduct, you may be eligible for compensation.

Disfigurement may occur after trauma has healed. Studies have shown that your appearance influences your odds of having a job and how much you earn. Disfigurement encompasses a variety of effects that cause an undesirable change in how you look and may include scarring, losing facial features, losing a limb, nerve damage that affects muscular control, or brain damage that inhibits physical functionality. If you’ve sustained disfigurement because of another person or entity’s negligence, it can significantly reduce your quality of life.

Paralysis is the partial or complete loss of motor function, leading you to be incapable of movement or feeling in the affected parts of your body. It is the loss of control over a muscle or muscle group and may occur in any part of the body. Typically, paralysis is caused by a problem in the nerve cells that send signals between your brain and muscles rather than the muscles themselves. Paraplegia is a specific type of paralysis that causes loss of feeling and control in the lower body and legs, and is often the result of a spinal cord injury, which may be caused by a motor vehicle crash, falls, gunshot wounds, sports-related injuries, and injuries caused by medical or surgical errors.
