Did Tepezza Cause Your Hearing Loss or Tinnitus?

Tepezza (teprotumumab) is an intravenous medication marketed by Horizon Therapeutics for thyroid eye disease (TED). Patients across the country have reported permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, and related auditory injuries after receiving Tepezza infusions — risks that were not adequately disclosed when the drug came to market in January 2020. Baker Legal Team is actively representing plaintiffs in the federal Tepezza MDL and reviewing new cases nationwide.

The Disclosure Gap: 10% vs. Nearly 65%

10%

What Horizon reported at approval — and described as temporary

Nearly 65%

Independent Stanford-led study — substantial hearing loss, tinnitus, or related symptoms

The FDA approved Tepezza in January 2020 based on two clinical trials of just 170 patients. Horizon reported that 10% of those patients experienced hearing-related symptoms — and described them as temporary. The hearing risks were not added to the warning label until July 2023.

A May 2023 peer-reviewed study published through the Endocrine Society — led by Stanford University School of Medicine researchers and conducted independently of Horizon — found that nearly 65% of patients who received multiple Tepezza infusions experienced substantial hearing loss, tinnitus, or related auditory symptoms. Subsequent investigations have continued to show a much higher incidence of permanent hearing damage than Horizon disclosed during Tepezza’s approval and early marketing.

The Federal Tepezza MDL

In June 2023, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all federal Tepezza lawsuits into MDL 3079 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, before Judge Thomas M. Durkin. The consolidation was designed to streamline pretrial discovery, prevent duplicative proceedings, and avoid inconsistent judgments across federal districts. The docket has grown substantially since the initial consolidation order, and new cases continue to be filed.

Baker Legal Team is actively involved in the Tepezza MDL with cases pending on behalf of injured patients. We co-counsel on cases nationwide and accept Tepezza referrals from attorneys outside Florida.

Do You Have a Tepezza Case?

You may have a Tepezza claim if all of the following apply:

  • You received one or more Tepezza (teprotumumab) infusions for thyroid eye disease
  • You experienced hearing loss, tinnitus, hyperacusis, autophony, or related auditory symptoms during or after treatment
  • The symptoms have persisted, worsened, or proven to be permanent
  • The injury occurred within your state’s statute of limitations for product liability claims

Every state limits how long an injured patient has to file. Some deadlines are as short as one to two years from the date the injury was discovered. With bellwether trial deadlines having been suspended in late 2025 amid active settlement negotiations, and with state statute of limitations deadlines expiring for some early patients, time matters.

What Tepezza Patients Are Recovering For

  • Past medical bills — audiology, ENT consultations, hearing aids, diagnostic testing
  • Future medical bills — long-term care, hearing devices, ongoing treatment
  • Lost income from time out of work or reduced earning capacity
  • Loss of future earnings for patients whose careers are affected by permanent hearing damage
  • Physical pain and suffering, both past and future
  • Emotional trauma — anxiety, depression, social isolation tied to hearing loss
  • Disability and impairment
  • Punitive damages may be available where the manufacturer’s conduct was reckless

Statutes of limitation vary by state and by the legal theory you pursue (product liability, failure to warn, negligence). Some states impose deadlines as short as one or two years from the date you discovered or reasonably should have discovered the injury. Because Tepezza claims often involve a delayed-onset injury, an early review by counsel familiar with the MDL is critical to preserving your rights.
